A Journey Built on Experience, Research, and Understanding
For more than two decades, Global Student has been privileged to assist students from around the world in achieving their educational goals in New Zealand. Among the many communities we have worked with, our relationship with students and families from the Middle East—particularly the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia—has been one of the most rewarding.
Leading this work is Global Student Director Dr Bridget Egan, whose extensive professional experience is complemented by a deep academic understanding of international education and cross-cultural engagement.
A Lifetime of Working with Saudi Students
Dr Egan has spent many years assisting Saudi students as they navigate every stage of their educational journey. From selecting the right institution and programme to understanding New Zealand culture, visa requirements, accommodation, and ongoing student support, she has worked alongside thousands of students and their families to ensure they enjoy a successful and rewarding experience.
Over the years, these relationships have extended well beyond education. Working closely with Saudi families has provided valuable insights into the importance of culture, family values, communication, and the unique expectations students bring when studying overseas. This understanding enables Global Student to provide personalised guidance that respects each student’s background while helping them confidently adapt to life in New Zealand.
Research That Goes Beyond Recruitment
What makes Dr Egan’s experience particularly unique is that her practical work has been reinforced by doctoral research focused specifically on Saudi students.
She completed her PhD with the thesis:
International Education as a Conduit for Engagement between Countries: The Case of Saudi Students in New Zealand.
Her research examined how international education contributes to stronger relationships between nations through educational exchange, cultural understanding, and people-to-people connections. Rather than viewing international education simply as student recruitment, the research explored its broader role in diplomacy, international cooperation, and long-term engagement between New Zealand and Saudi Arabia.
The study highlighted the important contribution Saudi students make to New Zealand’s educational communities while also recognising the lasting relationships that develop between graduates, institutions, and both countries. These educational experiences often become lifelong connections that benefit students personally while strengthening international understanding and collaboration. This perspective aligns with wider thinking in New Zealand’s international education sector, which recognises international students as important contributors to cultural exchange and long-term international relationships.
Understanding the Student Experience
Every student arrives with different aspirations, challenges, and expectations. Through both research and professional practice, Dr Egan has developed a detailed understanding of the factors that contribute to student success, including:
- navigating cultural adjustment;
- building confidence in a new educational environment;
- understanding academic expectations;
- maintaining strong family connections while studying abroad;
- accessing appropriate support services; and
- developing meaningful relationships within New Zealand communities.
This experience enables Global Student to offer advice that goes beyond application processes. We understand that successful international education depends on academic achievement, personal wellbeing, cultural understanding, and feeling supported throughout the entire journey.
Building Lasting Relationships
Many of the students Global Student has supported have gone on to become successful professionals, researchers, healthcare practitioners, engineers, educators, and business leaders. We are proud to have remained connected with many of these graduates long after they completed their studies in New Zealand.
These enduring relationships reflect our philosophy that international education is about more than enrolling students—it is about creating opportunities for individuals while building bridges between countries, cultures, and communities.
Why Experience Matters
Choosing to study overseas is one of the most important decisions a student and their family will make. Having guidance from someone who not only understands the education system but has also dedicated years of research to understanding the experiences of Saudi students provides an additional level of confidence.
At Global Student, we combine practical expertise, academic knowledge, and genuine care for our students. Our commitment is to ensure every student receives honest advice, personalised support, and the opportunity to make the most of their educational experience in New Zealand.
We are proud of the strong relationships we have built throughout the Middle East and look forward to continuing to support future generations of students as they pursue their academic and professional ambitions.
