The University of Otago is located in Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand. Due to the size of the university in relation to the local population, Dunedin is considered a university city. Otago offers students a great experience with most accommodation close to campus and also close to the CBD. Students come from different parts of New Zealand, to have a University of Otago study experience. International students benefit from a vibrant and fun environment where many of their local class mates are also away from home.
But the Otago experience is not all about fun. As one of only two universities which teach medicine in New Zealand (the other is University of Auckland), the university attracts large number of students to its first year Health Science program. This is a very competitive first year of degree program for students who are preparing for a range of health majors; medicine, dental surgery, medical laboratory science, pharmacy and physiotherapy. Students can also continue other programs after First Year Health Science, such as biological, biomedical and other sciences.
Note that University of Otago is the only university in New Zealand that offers a Bachelor of Dental Surgery.
We suggest students start University of Otago with a plan A and a plan B option if considering one of the more competitive Health Science majors. Some students aim for medicine but since places are limited, they often end up with their plan B. Fortunately the plan B options at University of Otago is great as they provide all the other health science majors.
